We Are…

The Northumbria Cancer Patient and Carer Group is made up of patients, carers, health professionals, voluntary group representatives and others affected by cancer.
Our objective is to improve cancer services and support throughout Northumberland and North Tyneside.
We are supported by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust who consult with the group to gain our opinions on new service developments, information leaflets and questionnaires. We are also able to put forward our concerns to the appropriate professionals and are confident that they are addressed.
The Northumbria Cancer Patient and Carer Group is not a cancer support group, but we do have very good links with our local support groups and can put you in touch with the right people.

CAN YOU HELP US?

Our meetings are held every four to six weeks at Wansbeck, Hexham or North Tyneside general hospitals. We:

  • represent patient and carer views
  • work with other organisations
  • liaise with health professionals
  • talk with local cancer support groups
  • carry out five senses surveys from a patient carer perspective on areas used by cancer patients during their cancer journey
  • represent the cancer patient voice across Northumberland and North Tyneside
  • suggest ways of improving services
  • review the patient comments given on the National Patient Survey and take forward any items where we feel we can help make an improvement.

WHY WE DO IT…

The number of people diagnosed with cancer continues to increase as our population ages and successful treatment means that more people are living after cancer than ever before.
It is important that the cancer service user’s voice is heard by the health professionals responsible for delivering cancer care.
If you decide to join us, support and some training will be offered to aid your contribution. No one is expected to take on any work they do not feel confident to do. We hope to use the everyday skills of each member.
Working with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, (who have supported our group since we were set up) and other healthcare organisations, we want to involve patients and carers in helping improve services for people with cancer or who have been affected
by cancer.
